4WD vs. AWD: Which is Better?

Excited about the rugged RAM 1500 at Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM? Wondering if you need 4WD or AWD for all your upcoming adventures? We’re outlining each of the systems to help you determine which is best for you.

What is 4WD?

A four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle is a two-axled vehicle with 4×4 capabilities. When a vehicle utilizes 4WD, it can deliver torque to all four of your wheels simultaneously.

Four-wheel drive is beneficial when you need superior traction off-road or on slick or wet terrains. Many vehicles can opt to switch the four-wheel drive system on or off, so you can choose when you need it.

What is AWD?

Many drivers use 4WD and AWD interchangeably, since both systems are able to power all four of your wheels. However, all-wheel drive is generally intended for better handling on every road, rather than specifically for off-roading. A driver can’t turn an all-wheel drive system on and off, like you can with a four-wheel system.

One of the biggest perks of all-wheel drive is that many systems are intuitive. They can sense when you are losing traction and send torque to the wheel(s) that need it most.

Which is Best for Me?

When deciding between 4WD and AWD, you want to consider what you need it for. As we mentioned, 4WD is best when you have lots of off-road excursions planned. Typically, you’ll see 4WD in trucks and some large SUVs.

An AWD system, on the other hand, is best when you are looking for better traction and control on every terrain. You’ll usually see AWD systems in cars or crossovers, but you can find it in some SUVs too.
