You turned your music down to double-check and, yep, something doesn’t sound right. It’s not a situation anyone wants to be in, but our Jeep® service professionals at Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM can help you get it fixed! Here are a few common car noises and what’s causing them.

Squealing or Grinding Noise When Braking

A squealing or grinding noise that comes when you stop signals an issue with your brakes. A squealing noise usually means that your brake pads are wearing down. However, if it’s grinding, that’s usually the sound of metal on metal which means you need to have your brakes inspected immediately.

Hissing Noise When Stopped

If you notice your vehicle seems to be hissing when you first shut it off, that typically means something in your engine is leaking. It could be the sound of one of the liquids under the hood hitting the hot engine.

Humming Noise While Driving

If your vehicle is humming while you are driving, many drivers mistake this for an engine issue. However, humming often indicates an issue with your wheel bearings. If you still notice the noise while you are coasting when driving, then you know it isn’t an engine noise.

Groaning Noise when Turning

If you hear a groaning noise while turning, this typically indicates a problem with your power steering system. Usually, it’s from too much friction. This can sometimes also be accompanied by a stiff steering wheel.
