History of the Dodge Hornet

June 12th, 2023 by

Has the recent Dodge Hornet commercial caught your eye? Just as the commercial claims, the bold new SUV is truly “swarming the nation.” We’re unpacking the history of the Dodge Hornet at Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM and how it got to where it is today.

More Than a Name

While the Dodge Hornet is new, the name Hornet is not. The Hudson Hornet had a relatively short lifespan in the 1950s. The Hudson Motor Company then merged with Nash-Kelvinator to form American Motors Corporation (AMC) and they released the AMC Hornet as a 1970 model (which was eventually discontinued in 1977).

Concept Car Release

Fast forward to 2006: Chrysler has acquired the American Motors Corporation and, with it, the Hornet name. The Dodge Hornet was introduced as a concept car mini multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). The MPV had an estimated 2010 release date, but as Chrysler Group restructured in 2009 and the economy tanked, the idea was abandoned.

New Model Release

Cut to today. In August 2022, the all-new Dodge Hornet was first revealed at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan. There were three new vehicles revealed: the Dodge Hornet R/T, the Dodge Hornet GT, and the Dodge Hornet GT GLH Concept.

The compact utility vehicle (CUV) sets the market ablaze with its distinctive style and exhilarating performance. In fact, the Dodge Hornet GT is the quickest and most powerful CUV priced under $30,000. The Dodge Hornet R/T makes its own mark as the first electrified performance Dodge vehicle.
