MOPAR® Service 101: Does Your Car Need Different Fluids in Wintertime?

February 20th, 2024 by

MOPAR Oil Change

Las Vegas has mild winters, even if they don’t always feel mild. If you’re wondering whether your MOPAR® service checklist this winter should include winter-weight fluids, Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM can help you make an informed decision. Let’s see what happens under the hood when the temperatures drop.

Oil

Colder temperatures cause oil to thicken. This isn’t an issue in Las Vegas, where the temperatures rarely reach freezing, but it might be if you’re traveling somewhere colder for an extended period. Ask whether changing to a lower-viscosity formulation is worthwhile, and get a change regardless of whether it’s been a while.

Antifreeze

Drivers should always keep their antifreeze reservoir full, especially during the winter. If you’re expecting to drive a lot during winter, or the temperature will drop severely low, it’s recommended to choose an antifreeze designed to handle sustained low temperatures.

Windshield Wiper Fluid

Especially if you park your vehicle outside during the winter, you should consider adding wintertime-ready wiper fluid to your tank. This will easily cut through ice and help de-fog your windshield quicker.

Transmission Fluid

If your transmission fluid is full and still thin enough to flow correctly, you don’t need to replace it with winter-ready alternatives. However, if your tank shows signs of thicker liquids, you should flush the gearbox and fill it with new transmission fluid.

Diesel Fuels

Properly maintaining your diesel vehicle during the winter is essential. You should fill your tank with winter-weight diesel fuel to protect against the elements. If your truck has a glow plug, inspect it on your next service visit.
