RAM EV 101: How to Charge Your Vehicle
EV charging can seem complex, but there are only three types, each with its own advantages. Learn more below about charging, then get in touch with Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM to learn more about the upcoming new RAM EVs!
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 charging is the easiest way to charge since it uses nothing more than a standard household outlet. This adds 3.5 to 6.5 miles of driving range to your battery per hour. Since this method is slower than Level 2 charging, leaving your car plugged in overnight is the best way to increase your range and may be adequate if most of your driving is in town.
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 charging requires a dedicated 240-volt or 208-volt circuit and professionally installing a charging station, but you’ll recoup more range faster than you would with Level 1 charging. An hour of Level 2 charging will give you around 14-35 miles of range, but the charging speed and capacity depend on your car’s design and battery powertrain. You can also find Level 2 charging at many public charging stations, but there is an even more efficient option when you’re out on the road.
Level 3 DC Fast Charging
Level 3 DC Fast Charging delivers lightning-fast charging, giving you up to 10 miles or more of range per minute of charging time, but it requires a higher-voltage connection that home infrastructure can’t support. However, many public charging stations use DC Fast Charging, making them perfect for a quick top-up on the road. One caveat: the overuse of these stations can shorten the lithium-ion battery’s life.
