What to Do if Your Car Fails Inspection

September 15th, 2022 by

Have you recently scheduled a car inspection and it didn’t go as planned? We know it can be daunting to figure out what’s next. Let us help at Prestige Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM.

Do I Need an Inspection?

To register a vehicle in Nevada (even one purchased out-of-state), there are a number of documents you need. For select vehicles, one of those is a Nevada Emission Vehicle Inspection Report. These smog checks are required on most vehicles that are 1968 models and newer.

Exemptions include:

  • New vehicles with less than four registrations
  • Hybrid models in their first five model years
  • Diesel vehicles with a manufacturer’s GVWR over 14,000 pounds
  • Motorcycles and mopeds

What Happens if I Fail?

If your vehicle fails, you’ll need to have it repaired. Then, you’ll have to retest it in order to register it. If it still continues to fail after you’ve made the necessary repairs, it could be eligible for a waiver.

Keep in mind, even if you are issued a waiver, it is only good for one year. The vehicle will still have to be repaired eventually. Also, if your vehicle is smoking, it will have to be repaired no matter what (with no limit on costs). Smoking vehicles are not allowed on the roads in Las Vegas.
